A Residence in Middleburg, Florida
Cypress Bend

This home is located on Black Creek in Middleburg, Florida. The home is named Cypress Bend because of its location on a bend in the creek and a bend in the road.

This 3-level log home has 3700 square feet of heated space.  The owners chose Swedish Cope logs which are an eight-inch, full round log. The large masonry basement houses two 2-car garages and was designed to withstand the flood waters of Black Creek.  Above the concrete basement two full stories are being constructed of logs. This makes this home over 40 feet tall!

Featuring over 1800 square feet of porch space including a wrap-around porch which is covered in the front, screened off the kitchen, and open at the back of the house. A portico off the front porch is planned, as well as a lift, making the home easily wheelchair accessible (or when need arises to take up a LOT of groceries).

The great room is in the center of the house. Its ceiling will reach almost 30 feet at its peak.  All the trusses are 8” full round exposed beam trusses. The two gable ends are conventional framing with cypress board and batten.

Be sure to take a look at the eight-page article in the September 2006 issue of Logs Illustrated Magazine highlighting this project.

Cypress Bend: Our Dream

Several years ago, Peggy and I went on a great ski trip to Utah. We visited several resorts, Alta, Brighton, Park City, Snowbird, Solitude, but by far our favorite was..... Deer Valley.

The reason it was our favorite is because in Deer Valley, you get to ski through all of these beautiful residential neighborhoods which multi-million dollar homes. And most of these were LOG homes. They were stunning. I remember Peggy and myself sitting in Stein Ericson Lodge sipping some wine and talking about how awesome it would be to have a log home. That was the start of our dream – Cypress Bend.

We first considered the type of logs we wanted, such as Cypress, Oak, Cedar, Pine, etc. We chose Cypress since our property is covered with several large Cypress trees. This led to our selecting Suwannee River as our log supplier.

It took seven years from dream to reality – but now, every day we get to see more and more of our dream home come alive. It will probably be November before we move in, but like all goals, the journey is even better than the destination. We’re learning a lot, and loving seeing what can happen when you plant a seed and watch it grow every day.
