One July 4th a couple of years
ago, we found ourselves at home alone. Our three kids were all
off with friends at lake houses and beach houses – much more fun
than staying home with Mom and Dad over a long weekend. We
decided it might be time to find a vacation home of our own.
Lake Anna is about two hours south of
Washington, DC where we live in the Maryland suburbs. We spent
nearly a year looking for just the right lot on Lake Anna and
another year getting just the right house. After many months of
back-and-forth with the Suwannee River Log Homes drafting
department, we finally arrived at a home just over 3200 finished
square feet with an unfinished walkout basement and two-car
garage. We have three bedrooms and four full baths. The main
floor is focused on a large, open, two-story great room with a
wall of windows looking down the lake.
Washington has just ‘found’ Lake Anna, and
contractors in the area are so busy they’re booked up many
months in advance. We reluctantly decided to act as our own
General Contractor. We quickly found making blueprints a reality
takes a tremendous amount of work. Thankfully, we had found Joe
Whitaker. Joe has helped us more than we can ever say with
suggestions, advice, encouragement and good old Southern wisdom.
Our hope is to
build a place where we can gather our children, grandchildren
(when they come) and friends to have fun, build memories and
share quiet times. As Joe and his crew help make this dream a
reality, we can’t wait to see the final product. Thanks for
sharing this exciting time with us! |
